george@hobbes.catt.ncsu.edu (George Browning) (01/22/91)

Welcome to the latest release of Usher!
Features new to version 1.1 are listed below.
For those that are unfamiliar with Usher, here is a brief description:

Usher is a popup menu that appears when the user clicks on the Windows
desktop. This menu can be loaded with applications as determined by
a user-created usher.ini file. Usher can also be used as a replacement
shell to replace the memory- and resource- hogging Program Manager and
hDC Windows Express.

Usher 1.0 features:

- Supports up to 10 levels of menu hierarchy.
- Requires on 9K of memory.
- Usher can replace or work with your existing shell.
- Has a Run... dialog box for executing other programs.
- The menu conifiguration file can be reloaded without restarting Usher.
- The current directory can be changed before launching an application.
- The current date and time are displayed as menu entries.
- An Exit Windows entry exists for quitting Windows.

New features with version 1.1:

- Usher now supports separate menus for the left, middle, and right mouse
buttons. Note the middle button only works if you have a three button
  mouse.

- You can tell Usher to use "sticky menus". These are menus that remain
standing even after you release the mouse button.

- Several new directives for placing Usher features in your menus:
@LINE@= to add a separating line into your menus.
@DATE@= to add the current date indicator.
@TIME@= to add the current time indicator.
@MEMORY@= to add the current free memory indicator.
@RUN@= to add the Run... dialog entry.
@USHER@= to add the About Usher, Reload Usher, and Close Usher entries.
@EXIT@= to add the Exit Windows entry.
@DEFAULT@= combines many of the above directives in a standard layout.
@INFO@= to display system info such as type of processor, math
coprocessor, and if Windows is running in protected, enhanced,
             or real mode.

- The Run... dialog has been improved to do a more intensive search before
deciding that it can't find a file. Note that Usher still doesn't associate
certain file extensions with an application.

- I've also updated mouse click handling so other apps can detect mouse
  clicks on the Desktop.

For those that have already written me asking for a uuencoded version,
you should get usher through email soon.

I have uploaded this file to cica.cica.indiana.edu (129.79.20.22).
It is currently in the pub/pc/win3/uploads directory as usher11.zip.
I expect it will be moved to pub/pc/win3/util soon.

I will also upload this program to GEnie and CompuServe in the next
few days. However, feel free to upload Usher to any local
BBS's as long has you keep the usher.exe, usher.wri, and usher.ini
files within the usher11.zip package.

IMPORTANT NOTE!!!!!
Current usher.ini files designed for Usher 1.0 *must* be modified
before using with Usher 1.1. Please read the documentation!

This is a Shareware program. A contribution of $15 is requested
if you use this application.

Thanks for using and supporting Usher! Your comments are welcome!
