[comp.windows.ms] DOS graphics in a window: correction!

mmshah@athena.mit.edu (Milan M Shah) (01/25/91)

o My previous post: I can do EGA/VGA graphics in a DOS window under win3

o Correction: yes, but then I can do little else!

Try this: Run a EGA/VGA graphics program in full screen mode. Wait till
you are in graphics mode. Now hit alt-enter. Graphics should be
displayed in a window. (This is why I thought that graphics programs
run in a window) Now try to give input to that program. No dice. (This
is why I am posting this note.) What happened initially was that I 'ran'
a chess program like this in a window. However, since I only know how
to use it via mouse, and you can't have a DOS window using the mouse,
I was unable to verify that the program actually 'runs'.

I hope anyone who wasted time on pif files after my initial note will
accept my sincerest apologies for the time wasted.

Milan

Okay, but at least you were able to get the graphics displayed in a window...
thats more than I've been able to do. When I run a full screen graphics program
and then press <alt><enter>, I get a window with scrambled contents! (by the
way, I'm running an Orchid Prodesigner II in 800x600x256 mode).

If I try to *launch* a dos graphics application within a window, I ALWAYS get
a message to the effect "You can't run a high rez application while other hi-rez
applications are running. This application will be suspended until the other
app is either in low-rez or text mode" (something like that). So...why won't
the damn thing even LAUNCH a graphics application...one that dosn't need mouse
input (so I don't care about that).
    Help?
