[comp.windows.ms] essential files for Win 3?

hp0p+@andrew.cmu.edu (Hokkun Pang) (01/25/91)

I have a 386 and my hard drive is running out of space (you never get enough!),
so I think it's time to get rib of some of the files that're abosolutely
unnecessary for operation. Does anyone have a list of such files?
Also, it's wise to change the setup.inf file to reflect what hardwares you have
and what options you want? I chnaged it a bit and I haven't run into troubles
yet.

You have such a list :-) It's in your Windows manual! Page 510, in chapter
13, on Optimizing Windows gives a full list of deleteable files in Windows.

Why not run setup.exe from outside of Windows. This will make the necessary
changes in the sys.ini and win.ini files. I am not sure you will accomplish
what you wish by altering the setup.inf file

well, my computer is a Gateway, that means I do have the manual for Windows :)
but that list's not useful all (who didn't know?), anyways, the setup.inf file
seem to contains a lot of hints.

oops! I forgot to delete the last line. This message was posted by me, not by
daly@ecs.umass.edu. Sorry for the confusion.

Well, you can put windows 3.0 standard mode on a single 1.44 microfloppy.
I know because a friend uses Piss/2's at school and wanted to run windows.
Unfortunately school policy forbids using the hard-drive. So I set her up
with a copy of windows 3.0 on disk... worked great.

I will list standard mode files if you are interested...

This is a listing of the zip file that I keep in my archive directory. It all
zips down to around 600K. Which is very convenient.
This contains everything to run on a 286 with vga.

ciao
