[comp.windows.ms] W4W and Generic/Text output

alan@comp.lancs.ac.uk (Alan Phillips) (01/29/91)

I've got a nicely formatted document in W4W, with neatly justified paragraphs,
and I need an ASCII copy to e-mail off somewhere. So I select the
Generic/TextOnly driver on FILE:, print to it, and check the result.

What I get is one file line per _character_; each line has the right number of
spaces to get to the place on the line where the character goes, and a CR!
Doesn't matter even if I carefully reformat the document so everything is in
fixed-pitch 'Roman 10cpi' normal weight upright face; it still does it. Not
exactly the best thing to e-mail to someone, really.

What _does_ make it go right is setting all the paras to be left justified.
Then I get nice ASCII text. Just as I wanted, apart from the formatting being
quite different from my requirements.

Now Word for DOS will print plain text to a file whatever the document looks
like. How on earth do I get W4W to do it? Since it's a fixed pitch font, it
doesn't _need_ to do what it does, and anyway the end result (as far as a
printer is concerned, but not a file for e-mail) is exactly the same anyway.

Maybe I need to save from W4W into Word for DOS format and do the plain print
from that?? :-(
