I have seen this request enough times that I know I am not the only poor slob with an unexpandable Paradise Graphics card with 256K video RAM. Sure I could buy a new VGA board but it hardly seems wort it to make the one builtin to the motherboard useless just to get a few more colours. All I want is to occasionally use Windows in 256 colour mode to edit images. How about zapping a driver that is 640x480 into 640x400 anybody with enough experience out there able to tell me whether I just zap a few bits and off I go or is there more too it than that. I have run the 640x480x256 driver on my lowlife card and I DO get 256 colours but the screen overwrites in the middle or so. It is close! Sure I know it would be a SNAIL but for the few times, I'll wait! tj .

It is not in /pub/pc/win3/video, and is called "win30drv.zip". It contains, among other things, the 640x400x256 and 800x600x256. It also has a "fast" 800x600x16 and a "fast" 1024x768x16. I have the fast 800x600x16 installed, and all that I can say is that it is not slower than the older driver. Should have done some benchmarks before zapping the old sytem, I guess. QUESTION for the net: my card's documentation does not say that it can do 800x600x256. I don't know why, because it certainly will have enough memory if I put in 512K on the card. So, my question is: has Paradise done something to the driver to allow this to happen? If so I am upgrading my card pronto. I just got the driver downloaded off cica and installed in my machine. It is WAY BETTER than I expected!!! Sure there is snow, sure it is slow, but there are times when I want 256 colours and this is the ticket. THANK YOU PARADISE! It is a little bizarre to watch sometimes, in wingif the image starts from the bottom then flips over when loaded. Games like asteroids (atmoids) are pretty pathetic due to snow. Windows Paint looks good in 256 mode and Print Screen captures 256 colours so you can paste into paint from wingif or whatever. Just so the world doesn't get too excited and spend the net downloading the 470K file, there is snow EVERY time the video updates. Yup, even when you move the critter, er, mouse. It isn't fast, but I am stuck with an on-board paradise (Commodore PC50 II) (DELL machines have same I gather) that I cannot expand the RAM. When it looked like there wasn't going to be a driver for 256x400x256 I started eyeing the mother board to see if I could hack on more video RAM. Seemed like a waste to disable the video and spend hard cash on a slightly better VGA for the few times I REALLY NEED (not the want times!) 256 colours. One day I will get a Hercules graphic station card or the equivalent hot graphics board to give 2**24 colours etc... but until then I will live with snow. Again, THANKS PARADISE!! tj .

The snow that everyone keeps talking about is evidently a flaw in the Paradise VGA card. I had a VGA Plus card for over a year (until it quit working today for whatever reason). I popped in another Paradise VGA card (this one is a 16-bit, unlike the last one, which was 8-bit). The "snow" problems went away. One thing I noticed from the VGA+ documentation... there was no mention of the 640X400X256 mode. It is a freebie "feature" on that board... in other words, an unsupported mode. This new 16-bit VGA board DOES mention the 640X400X256 mode in the documentation, and there is NO SNOW! By the way, this card seems to be just a 16-bit version of the VGA+ card, only it was OEM'd by EPSON. So don't blame the driver, which works fine! I guess it could be written to bypass the hardware problem on those cards, but it's unlikely. I'm surprised you guys never noticed this snow problem with programs like VPIC and VGIF, etc. Now... as for memory expansion. I'm tired of 256K VGA already! I'm not afraid to solder... Is there a way to hack some more memory onto a 256K board? There are RAM socket sites on this board, but no sockets... just soldered-over plate-through holes. Alas... Any advice, other than get a different board (you can't beat FREE after all!) :-) Mark C. "Bro!" Lowe - KB5III

This is a self ex- tracting file. In there are Paradise Windows drivers for all sort of modes. 640x400x256 included. I have tried it, but rather disappointed, because the screen flickers (snow) when the mouse if moved around under Windows. Still give it a try. The driver mentioned is does not always work. For example: 1) The wallpaper is not centered correctly (OK, so big deal). 2) Corel Draw, for one, will not work correctly. The main drawing screen is fine, but many of the full screen options go below the horizon (usually the OK and CANCEL buttons).
