[comp.windows.ms] Print Screen keyboard option and Windows

barryf@aix01.aix.rpi.edu (Barry B. Floyd) (02/08/91)

Although we here are slowly weening ourselves from our DOS
applications a few remain. Some users wish to press PrintScreen,
Ctrl-PrintScreen and/or Shift-PrintScreen in order to dump
the current text screen and/or future text screens to their
local printer (e.g. one screen messages, brief instructions/help)

Apparently Windows traps the PrintScreen button and sends the
screen to the clipboard. In and of itself this is a useful
feature when documenting Windows programs. However, on some
machines full screen DOS windows may be printed, as per pre-
windows. I can't quite figure out why one system enables
printing to the printer and another "prints" to clipboard.

Any comments, suggestions, page numbers, etc. would be appreciated...

Hi!

<for 386 system running enhanced mode:>

Make a *.PIF for the program that you think employs the wrong behaviour
(or edit the existing *.PIF). From the 'Advanced' options, the 'Reserve
shortcut keys' should be checked/unchecked for PrtScr and Alt+PrtScr as
desirable.

Unchecking the box means letting Windows do the transfer to Clipboard
Checking means letting the application decide (which often ends up to
the DOS's standard behaviour, that's sending the screen to printer).
