[net.auto] Audi 4000S, a good car to buy???

dwk@ihuxf.UUCP (Dale W. Kern) (01/04/85)

Does anyone have an opinion (good, bad, or otherwise) on cars
manufactured by Audi? Specifically the Audi 4000S? I'm
interested in the 1985 4000S, but have had little experience with
foreign cars. It's a beautiful new car (redesign has really
improved the looks of this car) that seems to be an outstanding
bargain for it's price, BUT, I have a few questions.

My major concern is repairability. Now I know that the dealer would
be more than happy to fix this car for nominal fees (hah!) in the
future, but I am used to doing all my own mechanical work. I mean
ALL the work, from brakes to exhaust to electrical problems to
rebuilding etc, etc.

In the past, owning American made cars, I have had no problem doing
all my own mechanical work because of the availability of parts and
repair information. Will this situation remain the same if I take
the plunge and buy an Audi? Can I go to the Audi dealer and purchase
parts for reasonable prices? (I know, reasonable is a relative term)
Will these parts take forever + one day to receive? Are shop
manuals available for these cars?

What about the reliability of the car itself? Does it rate high,
medium or low? Does anyone have any experiences with Audi's that
they would like to share? Any and all comments (even flames, I love
mail) will be gratefully accepted. Thanks in advance.

Audis are well engineered but be cautious of resale claims!

i don't know about the AUDI 4000 mechanically but it was among
the top three or so cars in popularity among car thieves. german
cars are also favorite radio ripoff targets since they usually
have really upscale units that come out of the dash with a
gentle pull. if car crime is not bad where you live you're ok,
but stay out of NYC with your AUDI, it's like throwing a
sausage into a pool of piranahs.
