[comp.windows.ms] Copying diskettes, standard mode vs 386 Enh mode

yukit@silma.com (Chuck) (02/13/91)

If I want to duplicate a high density floppy disk in Windows 3.0,
(1.2 Meg 5.25" or 1.44 Meg 3.5"), the following happens:

- In standard mode, Win3 needs only 2 passes to duplicate a disk,
compared to 3 passed if I use DISKCOPY in DOS, Win3 will tell
  me that the copying is 41% finished after the first pass;
- In 386 Enhanced mode, Win3 needs > 4 passes, I lost count because
I ran out of patience before Win3 finished copying.

Why does this happen? Is that any magic setting that I can use so
that I can duplicate diskettes in only 1 pass? I know Becker Tools
include an utlilty that allows high speed disk copying, but can
standard Win3 do it?

Interesting fact, the same phenomenon happens in Desqview 386, ie.,
if I DOS tools in Desqview to duplicate diskettes, it also requires
> 4 passes .... Why?

There is a utility on cica called dc110.zip (I think), that will let
you copy disks in a single pass. Its speed is not great, but that is
something that I'm quite willing to forgo for the advantages of being
able to use my computer while it's copying disks...

This utility does not work for me at all. It throws me out of
Windows and I cannot even reboot using <ctrl><alt><del>. I must
use the reset switch on the machine.

My setup is:
   AT&T 6386/25 WGS with 8Mb of Memory
   AT&T VDC600 display controller
   1.44Mb and 1.2Mb Floppy Disk
   300Mb ESDI Disk
   AT&T StarLan card
   DOS 4.01
   Windows 3.0 in Enhanced Mode
   FTP Software PC/TCP driver

The problem happens with both 1.44Mb and 1.2Mb drives.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
