[comp.windows.ms] gateway 2000 and WIN3.0

bruce@infopls.chi.il.us (Bruce Collins) (02/12/91)

I have used Windows 3.0 extensively at work on a 25 Mhz 386 from
Gateway 2000. Also, I use the Deskjet Plus printer with no problems. I
would look further at your set up before suspecting a hardware
incompatibility.

System Configuration: Gateway 2000 386
			Dos 4.01
150 MEG Hard Drive (C/D partitions)
			Win 3.0
			Lantastic Network

Errors: After reformatting the hard disk (3) times from drive errors, I have
some questions concerning the stability of windows 3.0, dos4.01 and if or if
not I should run share.exe?

I continue to receive sector not found and the "abort retry fail" errors after
the system runs for a day. I have reformated the disk one last time, and have
not installed windows as of yet. Should I use a different dos version?
Should I load share?

I've used a number of Gateway 2000 machines with DOS 4.01 and Windows
3.0. Not one problem. So using DOS 4.01 should be fine. I've heard that
SHARE can cause problems. I don't use it with no apparent ill-effects.
With problems like yours, I usually resort to SPINRITE. I burn-in a
disk for 24-48 hours in the extreme-mode of SPINRITE. If still get problems
or lots of bad sectors after SPINRITE, get Gateway to give you a new drive and
controller.
