I've been able to format a disk under DOS in the background.  What
has to be done is you have to set 'background' ON in the Setting...
windows.  Though it is slower than running it in the foreground,
it does work so you don't have to sit there staring at the screen :)

By the way, I have a 386 25MHz with 4Megs of RAM also.  Hope this
is helpful...
