[net.auto] More Muscular Cars

al@hp-sdd.UUCP (al) (01/04/85)

This is in response to the earlier 'muscle car' posting. These times were
taken by Hot Rod magazine, and published in the June 1984 issue. For some
reason, no Hot Rod times were included in the earlier listing.

All times are for absolutely stock cars. Here goes...

I wasn't aware that there ever was a stock "Six-Pak" option for
the 340. Anyone know for sure?

No typo here...
The engine in the '65 Vette was indeed a 396 425 Horse. This engine
was available in 1965.... the 427 was not generally available then.
The 425 HP 396 in 65 'Vettes was basically the same as the L-78
375 HP 396 found in later cars. I believe the only real difference
was a minor change in in the carburetor used. The 425 HP 396 was
also installed in a very few 1965 Chevelles, as the fabled Z-16 option.

The 340 Six-Pak was available only in 1970 AAR Cudas and T/A Challengers.
It included thicker main bearing webs(compatible with 4 bolt mains),
adjustable rocker gear for anti-pumpup hydraulic lifters, and canted
valves (2.02 intake 1.60 exhaust) allowing for extensive porting. The
block and heads are hard to find, so those wanting the six-pak setup
should look to the Direct Connection catalog and W2 hardware for maximum
performance. More info on the T/A motor can be found in Mopar Performance
from HP books.

It was called the 340 T/A. As far as I can recall, it was available
on the Challenger and the Duster. Every one I saw (I only saw three
Challengers) all had sidepipes, but I don't know if it was standard.
