After over 101,000 miles, I think my 77 Trans Am needs an engine re-build. Reason: Strange noises coming from down low in the engine, (presumably from the oil pump, or bearings) and slowly dropping oil pressure during the last few months. Can't seem to tune it for as much power as it used to have either. Haven't investigated compression ratio yet, as it's a little cold here now for that. What I need to know is what, if any books are recommended about rebuilding the 400 engine that came with the car(or any engine, for that matter). I have the shop manual, but it isn't big on WHAT should be done at re-build time, even though it tells how to do most procedures. I rebuilt one engine for a VW bug some years ago, so I'm not a total novice, but good instructions would be appreciated. Finally, this seems like a golden opportunity to re-do some of the things which could be done better on the engine. Drivability must be maintained at all speeds, and the vehicle will still need to pass NJ inspection, but within these parameters, what candidates are best considered if I'm going to rebuild?? J.
