One solution is to install the shareware "Freemem" utility from Metz.
Not only does it put a little free-memory monitor windowlet on your
desktop, it has an option to globally compact memory every N seconds.
This garbage collects useless old crufty memory fragments and leaves
your kitchen shining bright. >*zing!*<  Oops, wrong commercial.  Anyway,
try it.  I have no connection to Metz except as an insufferably smug
customer, but I must say these people are doing something right.

I'm not sure 'metz-fm.zip' on cica is the most up to date version, but
that's a start.
