[comp.windows.ms] Windows 3.0 on Novell Printing Problem

bchin@is-next.umd.edu (Bill Chin) (02/23/91)

After a week of reading tech bulletins and installing
new/old versions of this and that, Windows still doesn't
print properly to a Novell printer. Argh!!

I've installed Windows 3.0 on the server per instructions
(dump files, run setup /n, etc) and Windows comes
up just fine. It sees the net & queues, and Windows is happy.
However, when I print to the postscript printer,
I get a blank sheet and the printer goes
offline. When I print to the IBM proprinter, I get
lots of line feeds and garbage. Help!! WordPerfect
and other DOS apps print to both printers w/o
problems (except Quattro Pro 2.0, but that's another
story)

here's the setup:
hardware:
server: IBM PS/2 Model 70 with 6mb of memory, 110mb HD
    printers: Apple Laserwriter II NTX
              IBM Proprinter X24
workstations: IBM PS/2 Model 55SX's with 2mb of memory
    ethernet: all 3com 3c523's

software:
    Novell Netware 386 3.10a (6/10/90), DOS 4.0
Clarkson v8.x packet drivers, BYU IPX for packet drivers,
    XMSNET4 shell rev E.
Windows 3.0, with the SDL versions of the Novell stuff,
running 386 enhanced mode w/ a perm. swapfile

I've used three versions of the Windows postscript driver,
the one that came with Windows, the one with the SDL
disks, and the new one from Aldus (just posted to cica).
I've used two versions of the novell drivers for Windows.
I downloaded Microsoft's updated version of NETWORK.TXT
and Novell NetWire's tech bulletin on Windows and followed
the instructions carefully. I'm using thier recommended
capture parameters, modified PRINTCON, and used NETPRINT to
copy this to every user. I've got all the DSWINx.ZIP
files. I'm running out of ideas. Help!

At one time (long ago), I had Windows printing to the
printer, but it was a local copy (not a network
installation w/ setup /n) and this is impractical for
an open lab. I'm gonna try to see if that works
again on Monday. Argh!!!

Any help is greatly appreciated.
