. Wow! I posted the original article this morning, and I've had two email replies so far! Thanks! Let's see if I've got this right: It seems that SETUP checks to see if the current directory is the Windows directory, i.e., if it's running in the Windows directory. If so, it assumes you want to reconfigure the system, which is what I wanted; otherwise, it starts to do a complete reinstallation of Windows. Now that I think of it, I may have been looking at a C:\> prompt and entered \W3\SETUP (\W3 is where my Windows normally lives) instead of CD'ing to \W3 and just entering SETUP. If so, this would account for it. If this could be called a feature of SETUP, I don't recall seeing it documented anywhere, although I wouldn't swear to this given my state of mind at the time. It would be worthwhile to have SETUP confirm on entry what function is intended and whether the directory setting is appropriate. (Just use common sense, you say? Well, we all have mental lapses occasionally, and I've had some in my time that I don't care to remember, so why shouldn't there be an extra margin for error?) In any event, my appreciation for your suggestions so far. I still have to go home and put the mess back together. dhf@linus.mitre.org
