A freeware solution is the PC Magazine utility ALIAS.COM, available 
on most BBSs.  It allows command line editing, aliases, and 
customized function key definitions.  I run a batch file that loads 
the utility when I open a DOS window.  I regularly open several such 
windows and have never encountered a problem.
