How exactly does a person obtain access to and download files from cica.cica.indiana.edu? Is this servive acessible to all of us amateurs who only have a 2400 baud modem and a 286 machine? If, using the above equipment, I am unable to access this service, please let me know if/where I can access these programs/files on Compuserve. Thanks in advance. TvB

The archive currently maintains over fourteen megabytes of Windows-related files. The files are not virus checked, and you assume full responsibility for their use on your machine. Ftp activity at cica is considerable (approximately 25,000 logins per month). Therefore users who access this site are asked to do so during the non-load hours of 6pm to 7am EST. You may find the program AUTOFTP, located in pub/unix/autoftp.zoo, helpful to you in automating ftp file transfers during non-load hours. This program can be scheduled at non-load hours to download files from any ftp site. ** Internet Access Ftp access to cica is quite simple: type "ftp 129.79.20.22" to your prompt. You'll be asked for a login name (type "anonymous"). Enter anything you like for a password. ** Electronic Mail Access Some have had success with BITNET mail server access to various ftp sites. To find out more, send mail to bitftp@pucc.BITNET (or bitftp@pucc.princeton.edu) with a one-line message of HELP. ** Getting Software: The INDEX and ls-ltR Files Go into the win3 directory ("cd pub/pc/win3"), and see what we have by getting the ASCII file called "INDEX" (type "get INDEX" to your ftp prompt). The file "ls-ltR" is an output from the "ls -ltR" command on the entire Windows directory structure. This file presents an ordered list BY DATE of the files in each subdirectory. Both the files, "INDEX" and "ls-ltR" are updated daily. ** Downloading Software Utilities maintained here are in compressed format. You will need to have either ZOO, PKUNZIP, PKXARC, LHARC or LHA to work with these files on the PC. Look in the pub/pc/starter directory if you don't have these utilities. Change into individual directories (e.g., "cd fonts") and issue a "dir" or "ls" command to see the available files. When you are ready to download, tell ftp you're transferring binary files (type "tenex" or "binary" to your ftp prompt) and you're ready to fetch files ("get filename"). ** Uploading Software Please place all uploads in the pub/pc/win3/uploads subdirectory. The same rules apply to uploading as downloading: if the file is a PC binary, type "tenex" first before doing a "put filename". I would like to set some sort of standard file format here so that you don't need fifteen different file compression utilities to unwrap the software. Therefore, please use PKZIP (version 1.1 or later) or ZOO (version 2.00 or later) to wrap your software. PKZIP-Self Extracting Archive Files may be uploaded and will probably be converted to .ZIPs at a later date (especially self-extracting .EXE files that are ZIP-ped!) ** A Note About Bitmap Files (.BMP) Since the inception of this archive in June 1990, many thousands of users have had access to these files, and hence, plenty of time to "snarf and share" the bitmap images with their friends, families, and their favorite local bulletin boards and ftp sites. Therefore, the images stored here will age six months and then they are purged. This is the only relief valve we currently have to keep disk space alive for the other files. Other Internet archives such as funet.fi (128.214.1.1) "mirror" the cica collection of files so these bitmaps won't fade from site (pun) completely. ** Questions? E-mail to mr@cica.cica.indiana.edu (regoli@iubacs.BITNET). Please don't send mail to ftp@cica, cica@cica, or root@cica. ** A Reminder! Please, PLEASE remember to type "tenex" (or "binary") to your ftp program *BEFORE* uploading or downloading binary files. I get so many messages about all the "corrupt files" being uploaded when the person didn't type "tenex" before uploading. Same goes for downloading. If you are using KERMIT to transfer from your Unix host to your PC, remember to tell kermit "set file type binary" before beginning the download.
