I need some advice. I am looking for a memory manager that is compatible with Windows 3.0. I have read some things about Qemm386 that sound good but I've only heard bad thing over the net, hence I'm slightly confused. I have a 386sx-16 with 2 meg of memory soon to be expanded to 4 meg. Your response is defintely appreciated. E-mail to cgaeth@amsaa-cleo.brl.mil or post to this news group.

After some dithering, I've managed to make 386MAX 5.1 work with W3.0, in enhanced mode. My machine here at work has 10M RAM, so I set up a 1M cache and a 1M RAMdisk. A quick look at the Prog. Man. shows that it thinks I have 14M free RAM right now. I believe the trouble I was having was with my video card, so I flipped a couple of dipswitches and was off and running. Anyway, I don't have direct experience with QEMM386 but from some reports it sounds overrated. We have ordered a package called Netroom, which supposedly is especially good for systems running network software (the throughput is better). I'll let you know. -- + + + + + + + |snewton@thesisa.hsch.utexas.edu An old pine tree preaches wisdom, |Nobody else speaks for me, And a wild bird is crying out Truth. |and I speak for no one else. | + + + + +

I just received Qemm 5.11, installed it in place of the previous version, modified my CONFIG.SYS to refer to QEMM386.SYS in stead of QEMM.SYS and rebooted my PC. It works. And Windows 3.0 works. I run a Tulip 386SX machine (Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 00) with 3 Mb RAM, an IBM Token Ring Adapter and 3+Open network software (enhanced workstation). I have 517 Kb conventional memory available, and there's still 33Kb available for programs to be loaded high. I don't think Qemm 5.11 is overrated. It gives me about 100 Kb extra DOS memory. -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Uul Haanstra, Postbank N.V.
