[comp.windows.ms] Screen Drivers Question

geoff@nluug.nl (G. Coupe EPD/74 O75/1435) (03/10/91)

At work, I use a Compaq with an AG1024 board with Windows 3.0
drivers. This is a DGIS 34010-based co-processor board.

At home, I have a Trident VGA with Windows 3.0 drivers.

Both boards have RAM and drivers to use Windows in a
1024x768x256 mode.

However, I notice that the size of the screen fonts as
displayed by the AG1024 board are larger, and clearer, than
those displayed by the Trident. Windows dialogue panels are
also bigger. The result is that I squint at the Trident display,
but can easily read the AG1024 (the size of the monitors [Compaq
AG1024 and NEC Multisync 4D] is the same in both cases - 16").
In fact, my squinting has driven me to use the Trident 800x600x16
driver supplied with the board, with the resulting loss in display
surface real estate.

Now, my question is: is there anything in the Windows 3.0 setup
that I can tweak to improve the Trident display at 1024x768, or
is this something internal to the driver itself, which I cannot
change?

I notice that when the AG1024 driver is installed, I get a choice
of screen fonts (Large or Small), this does not happen with the
Trident driver during Windows Setup.

I did try editing the "fonts.fon" variable in the System.ini file
to substitute the AG1024 font for the Trident. Text in the Menu bar
then became larger and readable, but it had no effect on text displayed
in Windows or dialogue panels. The text in Word For Windows, for example,
on the AG1024 board seems to be mapped from a larger Windows font
(e.g. Tms Rmn 14 is substituted for Tms Rmn 12) to compensate for
the increased resolution. The Trident driver does not do this compensation
and so the Windows fonts (designed for standard VGA), are too small to
be comfortable...

Does anyone have any thoughts on a workaround?

Thanks,
