I just got my upgrade to Word for DOS (from 5.0 to 5.5). The program remains the same (completely file compatible with earlier versions of Word for DOS) but has a new user interface that looks very much like Word for Windows. It is not a Windows program, and lacks features such as the use of a clipboard etc. Its use of style sheets follows the functioning of earlier Word for DOS versions, rather than following the somewhat different template concept of Word for Windows. I am very happy with this move. I use both Word for Windows, and Word for DOS on XT class machines. Using Word for DOS 5.5 eases the problems of switching back and forth between different interfaces. Word for DOS 5.5 has a menu bar across the top with the familiar FILE, EDIT etc. labels. The mouse is well supported. To load a file, you use the OPEN command on the FILE menu, and get scrollable boxes listing files and directories just like in Windows programs. I see Word 5.5 being very handy for use by people who mainly work with Windows programs, but occasionally have to do wordprocessing on XT class machines or on laptops. File types however remain incompatible (although Word for Windows will import and convert Word for DOS files). A good combination would be to type the basic text of your wordprocessing chore on a cheap XT or laptop, then import the file into Word for Windows for application of formatting and printing. -- Bruce Dunn Vancouver, Canada a752@mindlink.UUCP
