[comp.windows.ms] Boca 1024x768 1 Mb SuperVGA card

antikainen@cc.helsinki.fi (03/16/91)

Does anyone have experience of Boca Research display cards, especially the
model with 1Mb of Ram (1024x768x256)? In PcMagazine a company called PC
Connection is selling it for USD 145. Is there a cheaper palce to buy it?

I believe the Boca card uses Tseng Lab's chips. Which type? Any problems
occurred with Windows 3.0 or any other applications?

Is there a better buy with USD 145 than Boca SVGA card?

Thanks for advise,

It's a very nice card. I'd go for it if you have a 386 or better. It
uses the Tseng 4000 chipset. It comes with drivers for Windows 3.0,
WordPerfect, 1-2-3 and other things, but the generic ET4000 drivers
floating around are newer and better than what Boca supplies.

USD145 is a good price. An international customer is probably smarter
to go with a major mail order retailer like PC CONNECTION than to try
and shave five bucks off at Yarmulke Electronics.

I'd second Tom's response to this. PC Connection is a very reputable
company, very good people to deal with. Their prices are not always
rock-bottom, but they are always reasonable, and the service is
top-notch. The ads are a bit 'cute' but in spite of that these
people are professionals.

It's very easy, even for someone in this country, to get into problems
with mail order if you don't know anything about the company. For
someone doing business with a mail order company in another country,
it's even easier.

This is not to say that there aren't other good companies: I have
had or know people who have had good dealings with Bulldog,
Programmer's Paradise, AST Research, Dell, Zeos, and others. If
you want to find someplace cheaper than the well-known companies,
your best bet would be to find one that's been around and advertizing
for a while - if they've been in business for a while then they have
probably been treating people OK (otherwise they don't tend to stay
in business for very long ...).

Good luck -

I called Boca to find the lowest price mail order houses, and 145 is the
lowest price anybody had.

It uses the Tseng ET4000. I tried two different cards and could not
get Windows 3.0 enhanced mode to work on my 386 33Mz. pc clone (with an
SIS chipset). Also, one of the cards made verticle lines wavy in 800x600
mode on my Mag Computronics monitor. Calls to technical support did not help.

The price is right, but the quality and support were not there for me.
