[comp.windows.ms] Noninterlaced monitor: What is going on???

ong@d.cs.okstate.edu (ONG ENG TENG) (03/19/91)

I finally got it! A TsengLab ET4000 chipset 1Mb VGA card supporting
both interlace and noninterlaced and a 15" noninterlaced color VGA
monitor (Swan VGA 15, SuperSync 5A). BUT I AM NOT HAPPY!

The Swan monitor came in today, cost $599 directly from Swan
(with 30-day money-back guarantee, I just might need it).
I have used the ET4000 card with a Daewood 14" interlaced 1024x768
($349 from HDI), with Window 3.0 in 1024x768x256 and 800x600x256
mode. Supposingly interlaced (since Daewood only interlaced at 1024),
there is NO flicker I can see. Now I use the Swan VGA 15
supposingly noninterlaced, yet I see flickers. Ok, you say that Swan
is operating in interlaced mode, but why do I not see flicker on
the Daewood but on Swan? Does the ET4000 automatically switched
into noninterlaced mode when detected or does the driver have to
specify. If driver has to specify, does anyone has the noninterlaced
1024x768 driver for ET4000 board for Windows 3.0 and WordPerfect 5.1?

Also, in text mode, the image seem to "wave". Does this happen in
multisync type monitors?

Also, I cannot get the Swan 15 to go into 800x600 mode both in
Windows 3.0 and WP 5.1. The monitor just go crazy and make a lot of
noise. What is going on? Could the ET4000 being attempting
800x600 INTERLACED and that it is below the frequency limit of
the Swan 15?

See.. now my text mode in 80x25 is wavy again. (Sorry, you cannot see
it).

Anyhow, can someone send me something to do noninterlaced 1024x768 using
ET4000 chipset so I can be sure this Swan 15 is noninterlaced 1024x768.
Thanks.

The Swan 15 does have a few improvements over my 14" standard color VGA
cheapo (which cost $300 3 years ago), like:

  - about 0.8" wider diagonally (big deal!)
  - nearly as "flatscreen" as the popular Zenith 1492
  - supposingly 1024x768 noninterlaced

However, another thing that bothered me is that the image is
tilted by 2 or 3 degrees against the physical edge of the screen. I have
to put something under the left side of monitor to up it by 1/8".

Any comments or drivers you have will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I've had a somewhat similar problem with my VGA card. I've got an Oak SVGA
card with 256Kb VRAM (up to 800x600x16) and a Tatung 1496 monitor (up to
1024x768 interlaced). The combination absolutely refuses to go into 132x43
or 132x25 text modes without invoking the graphics mode in DOS. I also
can't get these modes in Lotus 123 v2.01, which the manual swears up and down
should work. Again, any comments/drivers will be greatly appreciated.
