First of all, I would like to thank all of you who gave helpful messages about fixing my 1980 Diesel Dasher. I had the compression checked and it is dismal, 175,175,175,200 instead of the normal 400 in each cylinder. I contacted Sears about this (They ruined my engine by putting in an oil filter without torquing it to the specified torqye and causing the oil filter gasket to blow) and they have yet to get back to me. Looks like I will have to go to court because they do not seem too inclined to pay for my engine overhaul. I have several questions 1)How much of the cost of fixing the car should Sears pay. The car had 67500 miles on and was in great shape when they ruined it. 2)What should I get done on my car. I expect that since the compression is so low the piston rings will have to be replaced. The bearings must be adversely affected too. What else should be checked for repairs. What is a reasonable estimate ( I know these things vary wildly) for fixing the diesel engine. Is the engine the same as a Rabbit because I know somebody with a spare overhauled diesel engine. 3) If I decide to replace the engine with a gasoline one what else do I have to replace. Somebody said the transmission has to be replaced. How much is the entire operation going to cost me. Anybody know a place near Pittsburgh, PA, or Champaign Illinois, or New York city where I can get an engine cheap and have it installed for a low price. My car still runs so I am willing to drive pretty far to get a good engine. Thanks in advance. Sesh -- uucp: seismo!rochester!cmu-ri-leg!ssm arpa: ssm@cmu-ri-leg
