[comp.windows.ms] Looking for help with: nagel.bmp on cica

jmw@brahms.amd.com (Mike Wincn) (03/22/91)

I recently tried to download nagel.bmp files from cica.cica.indiana.edu
by sending:

	ftp cica.cica.indiana.edu uuencode
	user anonymous jmw@brahms.amd.com
	cd /pub/pc/win3
	get INDEX
	binary
	cd bmp
	get nagels.zip
	get nagel004.zip
	get samfox.zip
	get zipaper.zip
	quit

But only the 'samfox.zip' and INDEX files arrived -- everything else returned
the message: 'No such file or directory'. The INDEX file shows nagel*.zip and
zipaper.zip in ~ftp/pub/pc/win3/bmp, though a second attempt returned the
same error messages.

Email to postmaster@cica.cica.indiana.edu about the problem has gone unreplied
for about a week.

Has anyone here got any clues about this that they can share? Please email
responses.

(God, how I _love_ a deterministic system!)

Don't rely on what the INDEX files say. They may not necessarily be up to
date. You can use "ls" or "dir" to find out what is in remote directories.
The following is what is in the bmp directory on cica:

Hey! I resemble that remark! :)

Apparently you had an older version of the INDEX file. nagels.zip bit
the dust when it became eligible for removal here (180+ days old).

Are there any other directory that have deletion dates on your site.
I always thought that archives were there forever (As in nailed down)...

It might not be a bad idea to share with the net information such as
this about your site. Is there a general summary of your archive policies
about duration of files within your site.

I have enjoyed the general wandering within your site and would like
to be able to count on finding things there when I get back 6 mo or
a year later. Keep up the good work.

No.

For sites that have unlimited disk space... :)

Yes. This rotation policy of the bitmaps is stated in the README file
in the main win3 directory.
(/pub/pc/win3).

Thank you for the good words.
