[net.auto] Starting cars in cold weather

Won't turning the engine over with the starter accomplish the same thing?  At
least that way, you are using the battery for a more  useful  purpose.  After
turning the engine over for a few seconds, pause for about 30  seconds,  then
try starting the engine again.

My car would never start unless I used the headlights. Turning the
engine over would kill the battery. I think the starter put to much
strain on the battery.
