I've got an XT on which I had been running windows until I got an SX a few months ago. Now I'm setting it up for my parents, and the bugger won't run windows! Only three things are different about the machine itself: it had two 20MB MFM drives, and now it has only one 30MB using a different card; and the monitor is different (same video card). I've tried changing back to one of the old drives and the old card, but that doesn't help. What it does: the setup program works fine until the point where it should start windows and continue from there. Screen blanks and the machine locks up. Won't accept any keyboard input - not even a warm boot. ONE time, it gave me a 'bad FAT' message, so I thought it might not like the way the drive was partitioned. Once I've cold booted, if I try to just start windows I get the same problem once the title screen goes away. What I've tried: partition disk using fdisk 3.30, partition disk using disk manager, switch back to old 20MB drive, copy installed windows files from my SX. Every time same problem. Right now I'm recopying my original windows disks, but I seriously doubt the problem is there. Other things I've thought about: partition disk with fdisk 4.01, go back to original monitor (why in Hell that would matter, I don't know, but I'm getting desparate). Any suggestions are appreciated. Please hurry before I throw the damn machine out the window. --Steve Stancliff stanclif@gn.ecn.purdue.edu steves@mentor.cc.purdue.edu
