[comp.windows.ms] Windows and QEMM?

enzerinkp@topaz.ucq.edu.au (02/19/91)

I'm having a problem running Windows in enhanced mode using QEMM386.
The STARTUP screen appears, then after a pause, Windows dumps back to DOS.
I am only using the RAM option and have 4MB of memory with a 2MB SMARTDRIVE.

I have a 386-25 machine. Any clues? Please POST to me. Thanx in advance.

Regards Peter

Peter - I don't know how much this will help, but I am using QEMM v. 5.11 dated 9-7-90, with the Optimize feature. - Greg:

	I agree with Greg. I am runnin QEMM 5.11 on a 386/25 and a 1.5MB
lighting drive (its one hell of alot faster than SmartDrv). I have no
problems with Windows in enhanced mode. Check your version, your software,
and the boot up options again.

I've found that the QEMM/Enhanced mode combo just works on some machines,
and doesn't work on others. For instance, it doesn't work at all on the
machine in my room (it gives me an exception #13, which I haven't seen on
anybody else's...)

In the school's PC Lab, my problem is even more bizarre: It loads fine
until I LOG IN to the Novell SFT 2.15 network. Loading IPX and XMSNET4
doesn't matter; it only fails if I log into the network. Standard mode
still works.

QEMM 5.11 claims to be happy with Win3 enhanced, but I've found that it
really varies. If it doesn't like your machine, you're hosed.

More likely, you are having a conflict between your video card and QEMM.
Your video card is probably using an `extra' 32K to do bank switching
for increased speed/resolutions. QEMM does not expect this memory to be
used so QEMM takes it and declares it a High Memory region. When Windows
starts up, the video card will try to access this 32K and finds that it
has been taken over by QEMM, which causes Windows to crash.

The extra 32K region used by the video card is usually B000-B7FF. Put
'X=B000-B7FF' in the QEMM386 options and reboot. I had this problem and
it drove me crazy for a while.

I've got QEMM v 5.11 running with Windows 3.0 and have an interesting problem.

When using the himem.sys provided with windows, I can run Procomm and
Wordperfect at the same time (as an example). No problems at all. But when
I use QEMM, I can't run both, and get an 'insufficient memory' message asking
me to close other applications (the about program manager function indicates
about 13 mb of available memory). Also QEMM is noticably SLOWER than
himem.sys.

Any ideas? Please respond via E-Mail

Thanks in advance,
   Doug

I've heard that QEMM 5.11 is compatible with Win3.0.
What problems does v.5.1 have and what improvements have been made to v5.11?

Also, does anyone know of program that runs unders Win3.0 that can format
floppies, while you do other work?

Thanks in advance!
