hello, I am currently using a V32.2 modem (with a 386sx clone) to dial into a telnet server (cisco systems). I connect to a Sun, and do most of my work under emacs. You would think that all this whiz bang hardware would provide a pretty good response time, but I KNOW I'm doing something wrong. symptom: Several commands in Emacs (I-search, Ctrl-v ) force the terminal to redisplay the WHOLE !@#$ screen for every single row shift of Emacs. I'm using a 50 x 132 screen , and to watch it redisplay this many characters in such an incremental manner is incredibly frustrating. The same situation occurs when I cat a large file at a standard Unix prompt. the suspects: I don't think any link in this communication chain is above suspicion. I'll state what I THINK, and welcome corrections to any small errors, but I'm especially interested in being told HOW to do it, instead of the 100's of ways NOT to do it!!!! WINQVT : When it redisplays a screen downshifted by a single row, it seems to redisplay all the characters independent of baud speed and font selection. Is there a Windows user interface specification (ie scroll back feature) that forces this behavior - it is not much use to a vt220 enthusiast. modem : I'm using a standard modem cable with all pins going through both sides. modem init string: ATQ0E0V0X4&C1&D2M3^M WINQVT flow ctrl : I've tried both hardware and software , doesn't change anything except : tripping up some Emacs commands. telnet server : This box uses the modem dialing in to sense baud rate, the only parameters I've twiddled with are flow control, terminal length and terminal width, nothing matters sun machine: I think the only the to play with here is the termcaps file, I've never successfully compiled a termcap file that works with WINQVT 50 x 132. A previous net question on this subject yield the suggestion of using the command: stty rows 50 columns 132. It 'works', but I'm very suspicious that Emacs could use more details of the terminal than i provide.... Emacs: seems to be all sorts of customizations for how many lines to jump when repositioning the screen, but I haven't found a command that affects the behavior I've seen when doing an incremental search. SUMMARY: So, what is it? my modem,modem cable, windows, WINQVT terminal emulation, telnet server, Termcap file ,Emacs defaults or Colonel Pickle in the kitchen with an Ax!!!!.
