[net.auto] Effects of Gasohol?

parnass@ihu1h.UUCP (Bob Parnass, AJ9S) (01/25/85)

Since the typical 87 octane unleaded gas caused engine knock,
I've used gasohol consistently since 1980 in my Blazer
4WD (350 cid 4-BBL).

So far, there's been no ill effects; no engine knock, and, of
course, no gas line freeze.

With the abundance of "gasohol" these days, I would like to know the
effects of using this fuel. Its higher octane and lower price have
wooed me into using it, although I don't know whether this will adversely
affect my car or not. I have asked many of my friends and they seem to
have no idea. Will the use of this fuel give more performance at the
expense of greater engine wear? Or is that all nonsense? By the way,
I own a 1984 Plymouth Colt Turbo.

Although I have never used the "gasohol" fuels, I have a few words
of warning I feel I should pass along. First, gasohol fires at
a lower temperature than do our "normal" gasolines. As such, it
fires more completely quicker. In other words, the timing of the
spark may have to be altered to compensate. This leads to the
other major point that I wanted to make. Most new cars are
"computer" controlled. The spark timing and fuel mixtures are
monitered and adjusted electronically. Before using gasohol,
check your new car warranty. I believe that on some types
of vehicles, use of gasoline/alcohol mixtures will void these
warranties. I have also heard that use of gasohol in an older
motor could cause that motor to look for an early junkyard.
I can't substantiate that rumor but I can see the rationale
behind it. I would like to see a summary of the response you
receive if you would take the time. There are probably plenty
others who would like to see that too.
