[comp.windows.ms] ATM fonts from cica.cica.indiana.edu

I downloaded the ATMFONT.ZIP files from cica last week. When I unzipped
them, there was a readme that said "not to worry about the missing .afm
files. It will work anyway" or something to that extent. Well, I am
having mucho problems with 'em. I have tried Word4W, PM 4.0, Windows Write,
and any other font capable app I could find. I can't get them to print
in the new fonts. I have ATM 1.1, 256K buffer, Pre-built or res fonts OFF,
16MB ram, and a TI Omnilaser 2108. All I get when I print to the
printer is courier 8 pt. The apps all know the fonts are there (ALL OF THEM!)
but they won't print in 'em. Has anyone else had a similar problem with the
fonts??

You didn't mention editing the WIN.INI softfonts section. This is mentioned
in the README.DOC file included in the ATMFNTS?.ZIP files and is *absolutely
necessary* to get the fonts to print on a Postscript printer. I have the
TI Microlaser PS17 and I'm *assuming* your TI Omnilaser also speaks Postscript.
The Adobe Type Manager only needs the font metric files (*.pfm) and the font
outline files (*.pfb), not the *.afm files. When you use ATM to install the
fonts, your WinApps will be able to find the font metric files that are used to
display the font on the screen. To print the font, WIN.INI needs the path to
the *.pfb files so Windows can download the proper font outline file to your
printer. This task one is required to do by hand! Find the softfonts section
in the WIN.INI file. You will see something like:

	softfont(##)=c:psfonts\pfm\fontname.pfm

Change this to:

	softfont(##)=c:psfonts\pfm\fontname.pfm,c:\psfonts\fontname.pfb

You will have to do this for all the fonts you added. This procedure has worked
for me. Now I am eager to max out the memory in the PS17 so I can download more
fonts at once. Good luck.

I, too, have grabbed the ATMFONT?.ZIP files. They work GREAT with ATM 1.1
on my machine with both PM 4.0 and W4W. I've used both the fonts that came
with ATM which came with PM (including turning on the Pre-built fonts) and
the ones from CICA. No problems. I've printed out PM's CHARSET.PT4 document
with all the fonts I've installed so far (packages 1 - 3), and they all look
terrific. I'm using a Panasonic KX-P4420, which emulates an HPLJ II. I'm
also using a 512K buffer and have the Pre-built fonts turned on (as I said
above).

BTW - who's responsible for all those fonts? Is it one person or some
collection of people? Whoever it is, THANK YOU! I love them, and am
now trying to figure out (1) how to pick the right font for each task and
(2) which ones I REALLY want so they'll show up in PM's Fonts menu!
