[comp.windows.ms] A wierd memory problem, and problems with Newpaper 1.3

magid@sandstorm.Berkeley.EDU (Paul Magid) (04/14/91)

My old mother board died so I was forced to get a new one, and ever
since then I have been unable to run more than one dos session at a time. I have
4 meg of ram and a 386sx so I should be able to do this. I use the Lastbyte
which is a memory management util, and I have Emmexclude=a000-ffff in my system
ini. This setup used to work but I can not figure out what is different with
the new mother board.

When I load newpaper 1.3 I get a UAE. I believe that I have set it up
correctly. I have a pif for pkunzip and all my bmps are zipped up.

Any help with either problem will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. When I try to run the secon session I am told that I do not have enough
memory. Progman says that I am in 386enh mode. Wierd huh?

In the case of pif files you can specify the memory requirements of a given
DOS program. If the response is that there isn't enough memory it probably meansthere isn't enough conventional memory. You can use the PIF editor to create
.pif files for all your DOS proggies and tailor their memory requirements
accordingly. Once you've got that right they should run together happily.

As to the UAE I think you're gonna have to go for a hit and miss approach.
Why have you got that EMM exclude line in your system.ini anyway?

It's probably an interrupt or a driver. Without more info I can do no more!
