[comp.windows.ms] Mixing Hard Disks, Question 2

user2@cgevs3.cem.msu.edu (04/15/91)

In message 11773, Anant Mithal asked about mixing a MFM with a SCSI hard
disk. I have a similar question. While I was calling around about hard
disks to upgrade my system so that I can run Win. Applications, I was
informed that you couldn't mix an MFM with any other type of hard disk. I went
ahead and purchased a 120 MB IDE drive. My MFM (Seagate 20 MB) is/was a very
nice hard disk with little/no problems the last few years. I would like to be
able to use the 20MB as a scratch disk/temp disk.
What I would like to know is, are these "informed" sales reps really
correct when they say that I basically can't use my MFM with an IDE. Any
information would be appreciated. Thanks.

This is really the wrong newsgroup for this, but ---

You *can* use both. You have to have two controller cards in your
computer to do it, and one of the cards must be configured as secondary.
Usually the old MFM cards cannot run as secondary.

The process is rather involved and depends greatly on the brand/model of
contoller cards you have. If the IDE controller can be configured as
secondary, then you would continue to boot off the MFM and swap to the
IDE in your AUTOEXEC. Look over your docs, see what you find.

Ok, I had a 40 MB MFM h/d and then added a 168MB SCSI h/d to my system -
because the SCSI uses its own bios to set itself up to be able to use the MFM
also which is set up through the system cmos I boot from the MFM drive and
then primarily use the SCSI - works like a gem - I have also heard of a system
that uses several technologies- MFM RLL ESDI and SCSI all on one system - it
does work if its set up by professionals who really do know what they are
doing.
