My windows system is slowing down to the point where I can watch it paint the screen. It does this immediately after exiting from a Dos prompt (either running Dos full screen or windowed). The problem has occured after using Zip Manager v3.01 although not very often. As near as I can tell it has occurred after using fmplayer 1.00 (fm10.zip on cica.) I do not know if this is causing the problem or not. I have since reverted back to sound.drv with the only improvement being in time to boot. This problem has also occurred to a friend when he was using player to play a .ROL file from floppy. Because the problem has happened to both of us I know it is not as a result of caching software or video boards and their video drivers. It only happens it 386 enhanced mode. Since the appearance of this problem I have been unable to run many dos apps from the dos prompt (while shelled out of windows) that I used to be able to run. These apps now violate system integrity and terminate dos but with no decrease in speed for Windows. I really have to no idea what is happening and if anyone knows please tell me why and what I can do to fix it. Is it possible I have found a Windows virus? Any help is greatly appreciated (and needed). Thank you. Jeff Bryer umbryer@ccu.umanitoba.ca -- umbryer@ccu.umanitoba.ca Jeff Bryer Genetics II

This solves the problem for Zenith PCs, where the SMART setting causes the PC to slow down for disk access and not speed back up. Running FAST will not cause any problems. This is probably technically wrong. The action works, though. I have 'fixed' about 8 Zenith machines with whining users by doing this. If I have mis- explained why it happens, please kindly don't flame me. I don't have time to read it. Mark
