[comp.windows.ms] mode troubles

Hi
Am having a couple of problems with Win I hope someone might have some 
answers for.  So here they are:
#1  In 386 inhanced mode Win won't run non-win programs.  I get a bad path 
error.  The same progs run fine in real mode.
#2  Win refuses to run in standard mode.  When I type win/s I get the intro 
and a C> up in the corner (doesn't go too good with the Windows logo).  What 
I don't get is any messages (I'ld settle for the most cryptic error message 
IBM or Microsoft could come up with...at least it's SOMETHING).
If anyone has any Ideas or Suggestions ...
