Thanks for the assistance netters have provided in trying to duplicate the apparent bug I've found. To reiterate, on my setup (at least) starting Clock then Word for Windows causes W4W to use some strange font on the status line -- one that is illegible. W4W apparently substitutes the Clock's DIGITAL.FON for use on the status bar. The result is something resembling greeked text or bar graphs. It does not seem to matter whether Clock is run in analog or digital. Microsoft is aware of the problem, which is confined to Hercules monochrome setups. (Hence the reports I got from many people who were unable to duplicate the problem.) Now I have a (small) excuse to upgrade! Workarounds: Word for Windows is fine if run prior to Clock. Also, there are programs available from cica.cica.indiana.edu which provide the functionality of Clock without affecting Word for Windows. Now, here's a new one: try putting Word for Windows in the "load=" line of your win.ini file. Apparently setting the Ruler on does not "stick" if W4W is invoked in this manner. T.F.S. Timothy F.
