[comp.windows.ms] Canon bubble jets and Windows

dsowa@lock60.UUCP (Dave Sowa) (04/30/91)

I would like to hear from people who have used the Canon BJ-300
bubble jet printer with windows (2 or 3). Its set of features
seem to fit my set of requirements well, but without one to try
I can't really test it out. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I used the BJ-10e for a few days recently before my users took it on the
road with them to use with my Windows app. We were very impressed with the
quality, especially graphics (360 dpi), but if you are in a hurry or have
lots of big reports to get out, you may be disappointed. It takes about 45
seconds to print a page of text. You can download fonts to its 37K buffer,
but that adds another couple minutes to a print job. Other than the speed,
it's great.

Note that you will need the Windows Supplemental Drivers Disk (from
Microsoft for $20 or I understand from CompuServe) to set it up as a Canon
printer. Otherwise it emulates the IBM Proprinter 24 series.

The Windows3 driver for the Canon BJ-10e is also available from SIMTEL in
the file PD1:<MSDOS.WINDOWS3>WINSDL4.ZIP

How does this printer compare to HP DeskJet, in terms of quality of output
and speed? Has anyone used/seen both printers yet??

The Canon is a super portable printer. In terms of quality of output it is
in the same league as the DeskJet. It is a lot slower, and its portability
makes paper handling a major pain. It doesn't accept font cartridges
to my knowledge (??) -- soft (slow) downloadable fonts only.

BTW For the Deskjet+ and DeskJet 500 I recommend the IQE Super Cartridge;
you may never have to download a soft font again...good company support too.
