Hello: Just about every american car sld today has this anti knock sensor in it, with a difference in operation: when it detects knocking, the ignition timing is retarded, which achieves the same result and presumeably is better for pollution control. The pinnacle of this technique is currently reached by AMC with the 2.2 liter jeep four cylinder (in new Cherokees and Wagoneers). This system has a sensor for each of the four cylinders, and will retard the timing only for the cylinder which is knocking. This enables all cylinders to run at optimum ignition timing.
