<<Copy of message posted to Quarterdeck forum, Quarterdeck BBS and mailed <<directly to QDeck at Compuserve.>> Hello. I have posted a few messages to your forum (PCVENB) but have had little luck in any responses. So, I'll try this route. I have QEMM 5.11 installed, and am running MS-DOS 5.00 (Beta), Stacker, and Windows 3.0 in enhanced mode w/ 2mb ram on a PC Professional 386sx with a 125 MB seagate. I have enclosed copies of my config.sys and autoexec.bat, along with the [386enh] section of my system.ini. I have narrowed the problem down to the fact that if > 592K conventional memory exists when I start Windows, Windows kicks me back to the C:\ prompt when trying to open a "larger" windows application (such as WFW or PaintBrush). I have tried removing my permanent swapfile (8Mb), moving the page frame to D000, Excluding E000-Efff, tried using files, buffers in conventional memory, disabling smartdrv.sys, even removing my stacks=0,0 line. Nothing has helped. Problem is, if I move the page frame to D000, there is not enough room to load Stacker driver high. The driver looks for 51K of memory before loading, and then uses an actual 38K once loaded. I can get 638K free conventional memory before loading Windows, so I would LOVE to be able to use this memory for non-windows applications. I even tried X=0000-3FFF to try and force the Windows kernel to load above the first 64K of memory, but this doesn't seem to work either. Please, if you can help, any would be appreciated. As it is now, I cannot either run WFW or large windows apps, or I can load stacker low, have < 592K when I start, and not run my large DOS apps. Thanks in advance. --Config.sys --device=c:\qemm\qemm386.sys RAM X=F000-FFFF NRH NS NT NOSH (I have also tried FRAME=D000, NOEMS, X=0000-3FFF, and others) --buffers=40/x (also tried them in conventional memory) --files=25 (used to load some high but I just left it in common) --device=c:\qemm\loadhi.sys /r:1 c:\windows\smartdrv.sys 512 256 --device=c:\qemm\loadhi.sys c:\stacker\stacker.com /m=0 c:\stacvol.000 --device=c:\stacker\sswap.com c: d: (no need to load this high since it does not stay resident, but i loaded it high anyways-no change) --device=d:\qemm\loadhi.sys c:\dos\setver.exe (dos 5.0 driver) --device=d:\qemm\loadhi.sys c:\dfimouse.sys/2 --shell=c:\dos\command.com c:\dos /p --dos=high (loads part of command.com high - if loaded low, I only get 608K free, yet win3 still wont work). Autoexec.bat-- set pmdir=c:\tools --set pcplus=c:\modem\pcplus --path c:\;d:\qemm;d:\stacker;c:\norton5;c:\windows;c:\dosutil;c:\bat...etc --d:\qemm\loadhi c:\dos\doskey (util in dos 5.0 for remembering commands) --rem d:\qemm\loadhi files=+10 (rem'ed this one out) [386enh] section of system.ini (at one time or another, all or non of the below have been added, changed or deleted. No combination seems to change the problem). EMMExclude=E000-EFFF (have also tried A000-EFFF) EMMPageFrame=D000 (if FRAME=D000 set on QEMM) SystemROMBreakPOoint=false DualDisplay=true IRQ9Global=true HighFloppyReads=no ------------------------------------ As mentioned before, I have read all the tech notes from Quarterdeck, and attempted all the possible solutions I know how. I even turned of the EMS functions and tried QEMM as only an XMS manager, but no luck. We are suffering, and I'm afraid I will have to return our pc's to himem.sys if I can't get this configuration to work out. I'd love to keep QEMM installed for its High RAM capabilities, so any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated. Sorry this letter is so long.
