[comp.windows.ms] Finally a place to buy OS/2

wayne@csri.toronto.edu (Wayne Hayes) (05/20/91)

For those of you wanting to buy OS/2 1.3 (which will give a free upgrade
to 2.0 when it comes out), the new Elek-Tek catalog lists OS/2 1.3 Standard
Edition as catalog number 565062 (3.5") and 565070 (5.25"). Calling
them at (800) 395-1000 reveals the price to be $109 US. You're supposed
to get a discount if you're a registered DOS user (list $99 US), but I
don't know if Elek-Tek is offering it. Anyway, $109 is less than the
combined DOS+Windows price; you can make your choice from there.

If you're running a 386 with Windows in 386 Enhanced mode, then you'll
unfortunately only be able to run a single DOS box under OS/2 1.3, and
not even concurrently with OS/2. (ie, when an OS/2 task is in the foreground,
DOS box is stopped. When DOS is in the foreground, OS/2 continues to run in
the background.) This is basically how Windows runs
in Standard mode. Once OS/2 2.0 comes out you'll be able to run multiple
DOS boxes concurrently, along with all the other neat pluses that have been
harped upon here recently.
