Windows 3.0 on Networks:

Problems with installing new VGA device drivers:

From Tony Hooley, Insearch Limited, University of Technology, Sydney

Problem:
Novell 2.15 Netware networked PC (386SX, 4Mb RAM, OAK 800x600 VGA card) is correctly running Windows 3.0 from file server, using
default Windows-provided VGA drivers. When I run

SETUP/N

from DOS on the PC to install the 800x600 VGA driver supplied by OAK for its card, SETUP runs through its questions, correctly (
apparently) finds the files it needs on the OAK floppy, prompts for confirmation that the new driver ("SuperVGA 800x600") is the
one wanted, and then begins to rebuild things to incorporate it. Within a second or so, the message "Error building WIN.COM - p
ress F3 to Exit" appears in a red error window, with no further explanation of the problem. I can find no way of installing the
higher resolution driver for the networked machine.

The OAK disk is ok, as SETUP works with it correctly when WINDOWS 3.0 is installed locally on the PC (i.e. not over the Novell n
etwork).

Has anyone else come across something similar, and more importantly, does anyone know a fix or a work-around?
