[comp.windows.ms] UAE in program manager

rbennett@loki.une.oz.au (Robert Bennetts) (05/27/91)

	Hi...

I am at this very moment in Windows using WinQVT to talk to you, with Becker Tools running in the background, and I tried to load WinGIF to view a GIF I had just got of shelly from twin-peaks.
When I loaded WinGIF, and tried to open SHELLY.GIF it came up with a UAE and closed down that window, which is not real odd, (it happens a lot with WinGIF for some reason), but then I went back to the program manager to try to load WinGIF again, it came up with a UAE as well, and closed itself down, this is very odd, I have never managed to close program manager without exiting windows.
yet windows did not finish, I am still using it, I do not know what will happen when I close WinQVT and Becker Tools.
If anyone can explain why I would get a UAE in prog mangler then please tell me and why windows would not close down is more of a mystery.
Thanks for any expalanations of this..

Hi!

Most (well, all, could be said) UAE:s are due to a programming error in
an application. If such an error hits before an application has properly
started, the Windows still wants to get rid of an offending application.
But it doesn't quite yet know that the improperly initialized startee even
exists, so in a state of confusion it kills the (still active one) starter
process just to be sure.

I've seen it once or twice, too. It's funny, if you're running any other
applications - in my system IdleWild usually becomes the new 'shell'.

Btw, if you're developing Windows apps and do some 'iterative coding' that
occasionally UAEs like that, you can copy the PROGMAN.EXE into TASKMAN.EXE
(after making a backup copy of the TASKMAN.EXE !!!). Then you'll get the
Program Manager (and not the Task List) when you press <CTRL>&<ESC> to be
able to start new programs instead of Switching to...

In article <1539@loki.une.oz.au> rbennett@loki.une.oz.au (Robert Bennetts)
asked about UAE's in WinGif and Program Manager.

I have WinGif V0.9, and I have seen it crash on a couple of dubious BMP files
(dubious because they were generated by a quick-and-dirty filter that my
partner wrote). It will always crash if I trim a bitmap off the top edge
of the image - it does not limit the selection box to the boundaries of the
actual image.

I know I can crash Program Manager by botching a DDE conversation with it;
I have seen it crash a couple of other times, but I couldn't say what causes
it. It is pretty easy for one Win3 task to crash another. Never leave
windows running after a UAE - it is very likely that the damage is not limited
to the task that crashed.
