If the criteria is to be "performance/dollars" there are two ways
to maximize: more performance or (and we have been forgetting
this) LESS DOLLARS. Therefore I nominate for first place my
1964 Ford Fairlane. This exemplary vehicle has a 260 V8, three
speed stick, no power steering or brakes, simple ignition system,
and minimal polution control. I gave $450 for it two years ago,
and it now has passed 130K miles, and is probably good for 20 more.
It has needed tires, shocks, and brakes, but little else.
Performance? Handles like a pig on ice skates. But it gets me
to work every day, pulls my glider trailer without complaint
(try that with your CRX), and I can work on it myself. The
inescapable fact is that you can't buy more engineering for
fewer bucks than when you buy a used American car.
