[comp.windows.ms] Disk error, Followup

bradford@bu-ast.bu.edu (David Bradford) (05/30/91)

Tuesday I posted the following query (Article 13649):
-----
We are having an odd problem here and I wondered if anyone had any ideas.
Whenever we return from an application (anything that leaves the main windows
screen, as far as I can tell) we receive the following error message:

			     System Error

Can not read from drive a: (grave accent over the a)

.

.
-----
I have been doing some poking around on this since, and have tracked down the
problem to the TEMP variable. Now I am very confused... The behavior is this:
with the variable defined and pointing to a valid directory, the above error
occurs; with the variable either undefined or pointing to a non-existant
directory everything works fine. When I open up a DOS window, nothing appears
to be stored in the directory, so I find this very odd. At least the error
messages went away, but I worry about what the effects of having the variable
undefined might be.

Any ideas at all would be appreciated (please e-mail and I will summarize
for the net). Thanks in advance.
