[comp.windows.ms] Windows hanging up itself

My brother has a problem with windows hanging up itself every little time.
Now we don't have any idea what might cause the problem and we tried lots of
things. Maybe some of you had a similar problem and could give us a hint.

We thought, that it's no hardware problem, 'cause DOS without WINDOWS runs
without problems.

Configuration is the following:

    80486 EISA, 16 MBytes, MYLEX Caching SCSI-Controller (DCE 376)

    using: HIMEM.SYS, SMARTDRV.SYS, DR-DOS 5.0 or MS-DOS 4.01 (we tried both)

      and DCE376DR.EXE for the disk controller.

Which things don't like one another???
