[comp.windows.ms] Background image in Windows 3.0

boone@athena.cs.uga.edu (Roggie Boone) (05/27/91)

I have a "new user" kind of question. I have been using Windows 3.0 for
about a week, and every time I start windows it comes up with a different
background .BMP image. Now, according to the manuals I have read, all I
need to do to specify which .BMP I want to use for my background is to
put a line in the WIN.INI file that says: wallpaper=chess.BMP (for instance).

Well, I have done that, but it does not seem to work. Windows still picks
a .BMP at random. I have noticed that when I quit windows and look at the
WIN.INI file, the line wallpaper=X has been changed somehow by Windows
itself.

Is there some setting somewhere that tells Windows to pick a .BMP at random
and then write that name to the WIN.INI on exit?

Thanks in advance,

Roggie Boone

The only reason I can think of is that someone installed an autoexecutable
application that does that for you (look in the win.ini file under
'run='). I have seen a number of programs for windows that will do just
that, altho I have never used one.

Also, when you are changing the wall paper, try using the 'control panel'
program. Within this utility there is a 'desktop' icon that when you select
it will bring up a dialog box that will, among other things, allow you to
change the wallpaper. This is a little bit easier than having to change
the initialization files manually.

My first guess is that you are running screen peace and have the
random wallpaper area checked. This will cause random wallpaper to be
displayed each time you restart windows, and it changes your win.ini
setting to do this.

Otherwise, look for some other utility that you run that may do this,
there are a few. Usually they're screen blankers. I seriously doubt
that it's Windows doing this. But then again I've seen Windows do a few
very odd things! ;> Good Luck!
