[comp.windows.ms] Symbol fonts for HP printers from W4W in Windows 3.0

dougs@tvnews.tv.tek.com (Doug Stevens) (06/05/91)

I've got mine working now. PRINTERS.TXT references help for this in
/WINWORD/README.DOC; it's actually in /WINWORD/README.TXT.

I managed to get things fixed by re-running the SETUP program. One
of the questions to which I said NO (not realizing that it was important)
regarded installation of soft fonts for HP printers. This will install
the soft and permanent fonts in a directory called /PCLFONTS (note that
this is at the root level).

It appears not to matter that there is another directory called
/WINDOWS/PCLFONTS, and that all of the .PFM and .SFP files are binarily
the same as those in /PCLFONTS. There is an extra .BAT and .EXE file in
/WINDOWS/PCLFONTS, but those were there when I had my problem.

In summary, unless you install the soft fonts from the W4W setup, the
printer will not print them, even though W4W sees the soft fonts installed
by Windows setup and reports them as available for use by the printer!
In other words, W4W appears to look only at /PCLFONTS, not at
/WINDOWS/PCLFONTS.
