[comp.windows.ms] Paradox under Windows 3

Re: Paradox Under Windows

Does anybody know how to configure a .pif file so I can persuade Borland's
Paradox to run in a DOS box under Windows 3?

All that happens is that I get an'Expanded memory error' message and the
app terminates.

This is a nasty I'm afraid we've got a customer with the same problems you
describe.

Your best bet is to load the PIF editor and configure memory requirements
(KB Required/Desired to -1).

In the advanced options goto memory options and set both KB Requireds to 0.
Then set the limits to -1. Select both 'locked's and the uses HMA and Lock App.
memory. If that doesn't sort it your stuck I'm afraid. Paradox is a nasty and
I don't know that you'll be able to run even with this. If your running a mem.
manager such as EMM386 or QEMM remove it and see if that helps.

Thats all I have,

I believe that paradox runs in three modes under dos. Real, 286, and
386. Try running it in real mode. Slow, but should run under
windows.

You need to configure Paradox so that it runs in real mode. The
Paradox manual has instructions.

To follow up on this, we have a number of machines (of different types) that
can effectively run Paradox 3.5 under Windows using the supplied .PIF file
with its -win, -share, etc. options.

But...

One machine, which has a SCSI drive (the others are MFM or ESDI) and an
SVGA monitor (ET4000 board with 1 Meg of memory, others are VGA or double-
scan CGA), refuses to run Paradox under Windows, exiting with:

Not enough FILES in CONFIG.SYS to run Paradox.

Of course, increasing the number of FILES (which was 40) to even ridiculous
heights (like 99) doesn't help. Since we rarely actually use Paradox under
Windows, this isn't real important, but I'd really like to know...
