[comp.windows.ms] Problem w/NEC 4D

larry@palan.uucp (Larry Strickland) (05/13/91)

I'm having an annoying problem with my graphics setup and hope that someone
can shed some light. First off, the ingredients:
Generic AMI Motherboard 25 MHz 80386, 64k cache
	12 Meg Memory
300 Meg (roughly) SCSI (though it happened with an RLL also) drive
VGA 4000 from 2thMAX (also, generic Tseng, Platinum and CompuAdd)
graphic card with 1 Meg memory.
	NEC Multisyc 4D.
	QEMM 5.11
Windows software (a ton of same).

Prior to getting the Tseng 4000 card, I used a generic Paradise chipset card
with 512K of memory and was (relatively) happy using 800x600x16 while wishing
I could get to 800x600x256. When the above cards became available, I tried
them in my system hoping to be able to upgrade.

Each card has the same basic problem using their supplied (and cross testing)
drivers, each different. The 4D works great in 640x480x256 and also in
1024x768x256, but the screen will not 'sync' in when used in 800x600 mode.
Originally, I thought it was a driver problem and cursed people for not making
correct Windows drivers. However, I've verified that it has the same problem
with at least 3 different graphics programs (CSHOW, VPIC and MVGAVU).

I've also tried removing QEMM, thinking there may have been a memory conflict
in upper memory, but that didn't help.

A friend also tried another monitor and it also gave the same problem, so it
might not be just the NEC 4D.

While I'm not desparate (the 1024 mode is quite nice, but a bit small for
my eyes), I'd very much like to resolve the program. Perusing the NEC 4D
documentation helped not at all (and I'm loathe to call them if it isn't really
their problem). The documentation for the card(s) was also no help.

Does anyone have any ideas they could share? Any solutions? Is anyone using
a Tseng 4000 card in 800x600x256 and if so, what drivers are you using.

Thanks for your help,
-larry

I have the same problem. I am running a Grounhog Graphics Shadow with 1 MB
on board (ET4000 chipset) with a panasonic C1381D. I cannot get the 800x600
modes to sync correctly, however I have no problem at 1024x768. I believe
I have exhausted all posibilities and have not found a solution either
Help...

Had the same problem with my Cardinal VGA732. The solution is actually
rather easy - you must first manually set the scan rate of your monitor
to approximately 31.5 KHz using whatever utility came with your card
(possibly vmode?). If you look in your manual, you'll see that the mode
for 800x600x256 is mode 0x30. Setting to this mode should solve the
prob...if you have vmode, just type "vmode 30".
