[net.auto] Discounts from list price.

philw@tekcae.UUCP (Philip White) (02/12/85)

I saw some discussion on net.auto a while back about the discounts
you could get from a new car's list price by haggling.

My question is, does the expected discount change for a special-ordered
car compared to one already on the lot? Can you get a better discount
on a car already there, or does it not matter much?
Notice that I said "special-ordered", as in "from the factory", as in
"domestic US manufacturers only" (I think). I plan to special-order
a Lancer, the reason for my question.

I can summarize to the net any responses mailed to me, and I'm mainly
interested in your true-life experiences in dealing with the dealers.

For good advice on car-buying read this book:
   Don't Get Taken Every Time
   Remar Sutton
   Penguin Books

It has info like:
How is credit union interest different from bank interest?
How can I intimidate car salesman?
What is the dealer cost for this car?

(the answer to the last one is, buy a copy of Edmunds {Domestic,Foreign}
Car Prices) The book covers buying new or used cars, and selling your
own car, shopping for loans, and so on.

This is a *really* good book. I have loaned my copy to three or four
people, and every one of them has thanked me profusely.

You can also try the book entitled 'How To Buy A Car'. It is also buy a former
salesman who "tells all". I forget the guy's name but found it MUCH more helpfulthan Sutton's book and it only goes for $3.95.

I agree with this assessment of Remar Sutton's book. It has LOADS of good
information. If you must buy a new car, read this book, and take its advice.

Me, I flushed the nonsense and bought used from a private party the last time.
God, (most) car salesmen are sleazy!
