Hi, I have recently purchased a DeskJet 500. I am satisfied with the quality of the print, but I am unable to print much from the wordprocessor I am using to write my dissertation, ChiWriter. From what I gather, the driver in ChiWriter was written for the DeskJet (not Plus or 500). Even worse, the driver was not written to use the DeskJet's internal or cartridge fonts. So apparently the driver expects to download big-RAM amounts of softfonts to print any document. Of course, the DJ500 only has 16K of memory, so most of my doc- uments won't print with the specified fonts. (A print job typically may contain Greek, Math, Symbol, Linedraw, Bold, Small, and Standard (Roman8) fonts.) Questions: How much memory do I need to get in the form of HP's DeskJet RAM cartridges? Is one 256K cartridge sufficient? I hope so, because I already am using one cartridge slot with the Prestige Elite font cartridge! Anyone out there have experience with ChiWriter and the DJ500? Any suggestions on how to get the Windows 3.0 DJ500 Scalable Printer Driver provided by HP with the DJ500 to utilize cartridge fonts? I can't believe HP actually wrote this driver without provisions for cartridge fonts! Can we modify the driver so that it will use the Prestige Elite cartridge fonts like the DeskJet family driver provided with Win 3.0? Do I need extra RAM for Window's drivers? I don't currently have an application for Win 3.0 that creates Math, Greek, Linedraw, etc. fonts. I've only been able to play a little with the Write utility in Win 3.0. Thanks for any help. I can't help you with your cartridge fonts, but may be there is a workaround.
I use Adobe Type Manager and this *really* is a hit. Even if you only have
your standard fonts (Helvetica, Times, Symbol, Courier), there are still
lots of fonts in the various BBS, ready to be loaded down.
With ATM you have all (ATM-)Fonts within (almost) all Windows apps. I use
them with Winword and Excel. It works just fine.
Talking about Excel: When I print from Excel 3.0 on my DJ500, I have
to reconfigure my printer EVERY session. Just click on 300dpi, and it works.
If I don't do that, I get a blank sheet of paper (at most the gridlines),
instead of my spreadsheet.
Does anybody know a better way to avoid this problem ?
It seems to be a problem with the DJ(500)-driver, 'cause it works on a
Paintjet and a Laserjet.
Regards
Michael

Any sources for this driver for those of us who didn't get one with our DJ500s? I bought mine new last October, and got no software of any description with it. Of course, the policy may differ in Australia from the U.S.... Any of you HP people that read this group have any suggestions? Ross -- Ross A. Since the driver was not released until November, you should have received a mail in card with your printer which you can send in for the driver. I am assuming that this was the case in Australia as well as the US. If you don't have the card, or did not get one, try asking the dealer where you bought the printer. > Ross > -- > Ross A.
